NEWPORT, RI, August 28 -- Canadians Fred Eaton and Magnus Clarke, the defenders of the International C-Class Catamaran Trophy – being sailed at the NYYC’s Harbour Court -- won the first match race today with Canaan; they beat Australians Glenn Ashby and James Spithill on Alpha by about five minutes in the first race in light winds.

In the second race, the start line was off the pier in Jamestown with the weather mark to the west of Gould Island. Alpha led at the start by 10 seconds and at the first weather mark by 46 seconds. Canaan, however, used her lower and faster gear on the downwind leg to regain the lead at the second marK by seven seconds. On the second weather leg, the boats split tacks. Alpha stayed close to Jamestown, while Canaan went east, more to the center of the channel. Canaan extended her lead to about 48 seconds and later enjoyed her second gun of the day, leading the series 3-1. The racing was called after this, and Fred Eaton and Magnus Clarke have successfully defended the International C-Class Catamaran Trophy that they first won in 2007.

In the Consolation Round, Invictus was first, Patient Lady VI second and Orion third.

NEWPORT, RI, August 26, 2010 -- What a difference a day makes. Today was all Canaan all the time at the International C-Class Catamaran Championship at the New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court. The stars today were the Canadian defenders Fred Eaton and Magnus Clarke, who won all three races, while Alpha, yesterday’s leader, sailed by Australians Glenn Ashby and James Spithill, finished second in all three races. In point of fact, Canaan has won four straight races, winning the last one on Wednesday. These two teams will match-race tomorrow and Saturday to determine the winner of the International C-Class Catamaran Trophy in play since 1961. This is the 25th iteration of this regatta. NEWPORT, RI, August 25, 2010--The nor’easter departed New England today – more or less – and is off to ruin Canada for a couple of days. Its departure – better late than never -- gave the half-dozen winged multihulls sailing in the International C-Class Catamaran Championship at the New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court a chance to stop talking and start performing. As if they needed any other encouragement. Wednesday’s racing took place near Half Way Rock, north of the Pell Bridge, to minimize the remnants of the seas and breeze from the northeast. The wind at the start of the first race was 16 to 20 with puffs pushing it a bit higher. In the first race, Alpha, sailed by Australians Glenn Ashby and James Spithill, had a brilliant port-tack start. It was a shot over the bow. Ashby is an Olympic Silver Medalist and nine-time A-Class world champion; Spithill was helmsman on BMW Oracle’s wing-sailed trimaran that won the recent 33rd America’s Cup.  View More

GENERAL FORMAT

The International C Class Catamaran Championships (IC^4)  will be hosted at New York Yacht Club in Newport, RI from August 22-28, 2010. The IC^4 is the successor to the Little America’s Cup as the championship event for the for the C class catamarans.

Racing begins with an up-to-12 race series of fleet racing to determine the seeding for the match racing. The top two seeds will have a first to five point match race series to determine the winner of the International C Class Catamaran Championship [note that unlike the AC, the Defender does not get an automatic place in the finals]. The course is a 6 mile windward-leeward, with one mile legs and up to four races each day. The course area will be weather dependent, but either north of the Newport Bridge or off Beavertail.  Boats will launch off the beach at Harbour Court and store their wing sails in a duo-purpose hospitality tent.
