NEWPORT, R.I. (June 9, 2012) – Preliminary results show that Africa, a Taylor 45 skippered by Jud Smith won IRC 4 and the overall win on Saturday’s lone race. The breeze was a painfully shy westerly under mostly gray skies. With the sun came some wind. IRC 4 also accounted for the second-place overall finisher Nasty Medicine, a Corby 41 sailed by Stephen Sherwin, and third in class and overall was Entropy, sailed by Patti Young.
In IRC Class 1 George Sakellaris’ Shockwave was first. Flying Jenny 7, an IRC 52 sailed by David and Sandra Askew, won IRC 2 and Stark Raving Mad, a Swan 601, skippered by James Madden, was first in IRC 3. A Rives Potts’s Carina was first in IRC 5, having won its class in yesterday’s Around the Island Race. Potts is the Rear Commodore of the NYYC. Christopher Dragon, skippered by Andrew Weiss, was first in IRC 6 and Rush, Bill Sweetser's J/109, was victorious in IRC 7. John Hele’s Daring won the Swan 42 Class; Daring was victorious in last summer’s NYYC Invitational Cup presented by Rolex. The Melges 32 class was won by John Taylor. That class will be sailing its World Championship here at the NYYC's Harbour Court in September. Stephen Sloan’s Argument won the Herreshoff S. Class.
