173 yachts gathered for the 2008 New York Yacht Club's Race Week at Newport, presented by Rolex. 53 raced in the Classics Regatta and Olin J. Stephens 100th Birthday Celebration, July 18-20. Another 120 yachts raced in the Handicap and One-Design portion, from July 23-27. Sailing Center at Harbour Court Opens

Friday May 9, 2008 saw the official opening of the new Sailing Center at Harbour Court, made possible by the generous support of the membership. The Sailing Center is in Memory of Commodore Robert G. Swan 42 Class U.S. National Championship

Gary Jobson provides this video on the New York Yacht Club's Swan 42 U.S. National Championship sailed at Harbour Court in Newport, September 14-16, 2007. Not only did Jobson, a NYYC member, make the video, but his Mustang finished second to Amelia, skippered by Alex Jackson. The Swan 42 Class, which is just one year old, is a new one-design class commissioned by the New York Yacht Club in collaboration with Nautor’s Swan.  This is an owner-driver class with limits on both professional sailors and sail inventory. Eighteen boats, many of them competing in their first event, participated in the championship. Gary Jobson moderated a discussion of the 32nd America’s Cup in Spain, featuring prominent guest speakers Terry Hutchinson, the tactician from Emirates Team New Zealand -- pictured here -- Tom Whidden who has participated in eight America’s Cup races, Clay Oliver, a naval architect who has helped design almost every winning boat since 1984, Halsey Herreshoff, navigator for several Cup defenses ending in 1983, and the NYYC's Brad Dellenbaugh, the Cup Umpire.

Amanda Clark and John Dane -- NYYC Members -- Make US Olympic Sailing Team

Amanda Clark and Sarah Mergenthaler have qualified as the US entry in the Women's 470 class for the Olympics to be sailed in China in 2008. In this trials the men's and women's 470 teams sailed and were scored together, and Clark and Mergenthaler were overall winners there, too. Also, 57-year-old John Dane III, a NYYC member, and his son-in-law Austin Sperry, age 29, qualified in the Star Class. Other NYYC members in the trials were Pete Spaulding, crew for Morgan Larson, third in the 49er, Andy Horton fourth in the Star, Paul Callahan, second in the Sonar Paralympic Class, and Jon Singsen, Laser.
