Joint Cruise with the Seattle Yacht Club in the Pacific Northwest:

The New York Yacht Club and the Seattle Yacht Club (SYC) are planning a joint cruise in SYC’s home waters next summer: August 27 –September 7, 2009.  This will be a unique opportunity for Club members to explore the spectacular San Juan Islands of Washington State and the Gulf Islands of British Columbia in company with knowledgeable local yachtsmen. Highlights may include stops at a number of private islands, Victoria, B.C., home of the famous Butchart Gardens, and a chance to learn about traditional Northwest Coast native culture from local experts.

27 August – Thursday
Arrival and Kickoff Reception at Seattle Yacht Club
·         Arrival in Seattle
·         Pick up rental car for one way drop in Bellingham/Anacortes, or airport shuttle
·         Check in to hotel of choice
·         Cocktail/Dinner Reception and Skippers briefing at Seattle Yacht Club Mainstation
 
28 August – Friday
Charter Preparations in Anacortes or Bellingham
·         Rental car or Shuttle bus to Anacortes/Bellingham
·         Provisioning
·         Charter yacht orientation/load yachts
·         Bellingham charter’s dinner at a nearby restaurant (wine courtesy of NW Explorations)
·         Sleep aboard yachts as available; otherwise in local hotels
 
29 August – Saturday
Anacortes/Bellingham to West Sound, Orcas Is. (14 nm)
·         Charter yacht orientation/load yachts
·         09:00-14:00: Underway for West Sound (Double Island)
·         At anchor and rafting
·         Greenbox on shore
·         Dinner onboard individual yachts
Note: a “Greenbox” is an SYC traditional potluck cocktail hour
 
30 August – Sunday
West Sound to Stuart Island (11 nm)
  •          08:30 Morning announcements VHF ch. 74
·         Underway to Stuart Island
·         At anchor in Reid or Prevost Harbor
·         Afternoon hike to Turn Point Light            
                   and/or
possible tour of nearby Johns Island and Northeast Coast native art and buildings; (transport by dinghy or Camp Nor’wester logistics barge)
·         Dinner aboard yachts
 31 August – Monday
Stuart Island to Victoria, B.C. (25 nm)

·         09:00 underway for Victoria via Baynes Passage (s.t. currents)
·         Dockage at reserved Inner Harbour slips below Empress Hotel

Montague Harbour to Roche Harbor (19nm)

·         Underway at will for U.S. waters and Roche Harbor, San Juan Island
·         Clear Customs
·         At anchor, Roche Harbor or dockage at Roche Harbor Marina (SYC yachts at Henry Island)
·         Greenbox cocktails and BBQ Wind-Up Dinner at SYC Henry Island Outstation
         
5 September – Saturday
Roche Harbor and Environs – Lay Day
  •          Cruise disbands
·         Remain at Roche Harbor Marina or swing around to anchor in Garrison or Westcott Bay (see also the note on travel to charter bases below)
·         Day Sailing if breeze permits
·         Take dinghies around to English Camp, Garrison Bay
·         Explore the Nature Sculpture Park
·         Dinner ashore or aboard boats
         
N.B.: some charters may be due for return by noon, 6 September, in Anacortes or Bellingham. Rather than a second night at Roche Harbor, yachts (particularly sailboats) may be well-served to begin their easting on Saturday, given the distances involved.

6 September – Sunday
Roche Harbor (or?) to Anacortes/Bellingham   (26nm)/(30nm)
·         08:00 underway for return to charter bases by noon, possibly from anchorages east of Roche Harbor
·         Empty and clean vessels
·         Travel to SeaTac area hotels for Monday Flights (one way rental or airport shuttles)
 
7 September – Monday – Labor Day
