HC: Marble House Tour
Friday, February 17th
Marine Art & History Month goes returns to Harbour Court on Friday, February 17th, when Paul Miller, Curator for the Preservation Society of Newport County gives us a special behind-the-scenes tour of Marble House. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt and built between 1888 and 1892 for NYYC member William K. Vanderbilt and his wife Alva, the house is adorned with 500,000 cubic feet of marble. This social and architectural landmark set the pace for Newport’s subsequent transformation from a quiet summer colony of wooden houses to the legendary resort of opulent stone palaces.
Filled with incredible period furniture, Marble House is also the home of Harold S. Vanderbilt’s collection of yachting memorabilia. You won’t want to miss this exclusive look at one of Newport’s most famous mansions.
Reservations are required and space is limited. Members will meet at Marble House, 596 Bellevue Avenue, Newport at 1600. Á la carte dinner is available in the Bolero Grill at Harbour Court following the tour.
