NY Club Night: Sir Robin Knox-Johnston
Wednesday, March 3rd - SOLD OUT
The NY Events Committee is pleased and honored to announce that the legendary Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has accepted the Club’s invitation to be a guest speaker at a Club Night on Wednesday, March 3rd at the 44th Street Club House. His presentation is aptly entitled: “A Life of Sailing." In 1968-69, Robin Knox-Johnston entered his 32-foot ketch Suhaili in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Trophy for the first person to sail singlehanded and non-stop around the world. He sailed Suhaili 30,123 nm in 312 days, and his was the only boat to cross the finish line, setting a new world record. Since this epic voyage, Robin Knox-Johnston has sailed in seven quadrennial doublehanded Round Britain races. He has skippered Condor to line honors in two legs of the 1977-08 Whitbread Round the World Race, co-skippered Enza New Zealand with the late Sir Peter Blake in 1994 to win the Jules Verne Trophy for the fastest circumnavigation of the world and completed the Velux 5 Oceans solo around the world race in fourth place in 2006-07 at the age of 68.
It is easy to understand why he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1995 and retains his honorary title “Sir.” His years of leadership in the sport have been recognized by the International Sailing Federation that named him the 1994 World Sailor of the Year and in 2007 inducted him into the ISAF Hall of Fame. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear from the sport’s world-class living legend!
The festivities begin at 1800 with cocktails in the Model Room followed by the presentation and dinner. Reservations at $70 per person are required. Dress is business attire. To sign-up, contact Assistant Director of Special Events Rae Derke at (212) 201-4336 or send an e-mail to banquetny@nyyc.org.
