Ron Holland Speaks
Yacht Designer Series
100 NYYC members and guests gathered on Tuesday, October 7 to hear yacht designer Ron Holland speak at 44th Street. A native of New Zealand now based in Kinsale, Ireland, Ron Holland, a NYYC member, quickly gained a reputation for designing fast racing boats. His designs won the 1973 Quarter Ton Cup with the 24 foot Eygthene, the 1975 Fastnet with Golden Delicious and the 1977 Fastnet with the 40 foot Imp. During the 1980’s Ron turned his attention to large, high performance sailing yachts and was a pioneering designer of modern superyachts with luxurious interiors that handled like sailboats and used all of the new technologies for high performance sailing without a large crew. His most famous design to date is the largest sloop ever built, the 247 foot Mirabella V, launched in 2003 for Joe Vittoria, a NYYC member. Guy Gurney photos.

Virgin Money's Transatlantic Record Attempt has Ended
Friday, Oct. 24 -- According to their website: "After approximately 2 days and 4 hours at sea in the face of impossible odds the crew of Virgin Money had to admit defeat on their first attempt to set a new world record for the fastest monohull crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. After 2 days that saw the crew and Virgin Money overcome seas of 40ft and gale force winds of between 7 and 9 their dreams were finally dashed when a ‘monster wave’ took out the spinnaker, washed a ten man life boat overboard and ripped a huge gash in the mainsail. Speaking to Mission Control after the decision to abandon the record attempt this time round, the crew was frustrated but upbeat about the boat’s performance and chances of success in the future." Big Winds, Big Winners
NEWPORT, R.I. (July 27, 2008) -- Diabolical winds made for plenty of exciting stories back at the New York Yacht Club after its sixth biennial Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex concluded today. The four-day competition had started much the same wet, windy way on opening day, but fortunately sunshine followed for two days with fair winds to dry things out. Today, the race committee managed a race in each of four classes (NYYC Club Swan 42, Melges 32, J/109 and J/105) that were competing on Rhode Island Sound but had to abandon a second race when a storm swept through, wreaking havoc with 48-50 knot winds. All told, 120 boats were competing. Another six classes (IRC 1 and 2, PHRF 1 and 2, J/122 and Beneteau First 36.7) had taken off on a middle-distance race around Conanicut Island and felt top winds of a more reasonable 28 knots. A Classic Day Wraps up Classic Racing
NEWPORT, R.I. (July 20, 2008) -- Racing concluded today for the first half of the New York Yacht Club's (NYYC) Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. For 53 classic yachts it was the culmination of a colorful tribute to the Golden Era of yachting that included a 100th birthday party for one of yachting’s greatest and most prolific designers, Olin J. Stephens (who attended the celebration at the New York Yacht Club last night). While a fleet of historic 12 Metres raced north of the Newport Bridge, one-design classes for S Boats and 6 Metres took up some of the real estate for around-the-buoys racing south of the bridge, and four more classes of mixed designs headed off on a circumnavigation of Conanicut Island. This course is famous for showing off the scenic shores of both the East and West Passages of Narragansett Bay. The sum total was spirited racing in a variety of conditions for each fleet.
