Rolex Fastnet Race

Cowes, England, August 14 -- The record-sized Rolex Fastnet Race fleet set sail from Cowes in classic conditions – a beat westward up the Solent in a building west-southwesterly and sunshine, but with an ominous looking cloud line over the mainland. In the end there were 314 starters, the largest fleet ever to start the Rolex Fastnet Race following the previous record of 303 in 1979. Photo by Rolex/Daniel Forster shows former-NYYC Commodore Lawrence S. Huntington's Snow Lion an entry in the Fastnet, along with such other NYYC members as George David's Rambler, Rear Commodore A. Transatlantic Race 2011

North Atlantic Odyssey

Newport, R.I. USA (July 22, 2011) – As “an extended adventurous voyage,” the odyssey that is the Transatlantic Race 2011 was a defining event in ocean racing, as well as in the lives of the sailors aboard the 26 competing yachts.  The race made history with the establishment of a new record – crossing 2,975 miles of ocean from Newport, R.I. to The Lizard on the south coast of England – and was the result of a successful collaboration between the Royal Yacht Squadron (founded in 1815), the New York Yacht Club (1844), the Royal Ocean Racing Club (1925) and the Storm Trysail Club (1938).

Transatlantic Race 2011: The Long and Short of It

NEWPORT, R.I., USA (June 16, 2011) – The extremes of crossing the Atlantic Ocean will be experienced very differently by crews on the longest and shortest yachts competing in the upcoming Transatlantic Race 2011 (TR 2011).  This adventure challenge, which aims to add 2,975 nautical miles to its participants’ log books, is co-organized by the Royal Yacht Squadron, New York Yacht Club, Royal Ocean Racing Club and Storm Trysail Club.  The TR 2011 starts off Castle Hill in Newport, R.I. (on Sunday, June 26; Wednesday, June 29; and Sunday, July 3) and expects to greet its first finisher off Lizard Point in South Cornwall (UK) sometime in mid-July, depending on many things, not the least of which are the lengths of the boats making the crossing. On the one hand there is the Perini Navi designed Maltese Falcon, at 289 feet, one of the largest privately-owned sailboats in the world.  On the other there are two Class 40s, which at 40 feet are specially designed for short-handed offshore and coastal racing.  These extremes are punctuated by the fact that Maltese Falcon looks every bit the world cruiser, with stem-to-stern luxury incorporated into its design, while the Class 40s seem relatively stark–even like dinghies–in comparison. But each team at either end of the spectrum has its reasons for undertaking the TR2011 challenge, and each team intends to succeed, if not win. View More

New York Yacht Club 157th Annual Regatta Presented by Rolex

Record Number of Teams are Ready to Rock

NEWPORT, R.I. (June 7, 2011) – The New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta presented by Rolex will be as big as ever in its 157th edition scheduled for Newport, R.I., this Friday through Sunday, June 10-12.  In fact, while entrants for the event typically rise during even-numbered years to coincide with the running of the biennial Newport to Bermuda Race (co-hosted by the Cruising Club of America and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club), in this “off-year” of 2011 the number of boats has reached 135, surpassing all other Bermuda Race years, including 2006, when the Bermuda Race celebrated its 100th Anniversary and the Annual Regatta hosted its all-time high of 132 boats. 139 Yachts Entered -- A Record!

NEWPORT, R.I. (May 23, 2011) – Beginning with America’s Civil War in 1861, only wars have caused the New York Yacht Club’s Annual Regatta to be cancelled. Now in its 157th edition and the longest-running regatta in America, the NYYC’s Annual Regatta presented by Rolex is known for attracting some of yachting’s best and brightest. This year, however, with major regattas either starting or finishing in Newport as well as the addition of the new Navigator Races, the NYYC Annual Regatta presented by Rolex, to be sailed June 10-12, is already attracting a booming entry list. “We have 84 registered entries at this moment, which is a great number at this time,” said Regatta Chair Peggy Comfort (Newport, R.I.), a NYYC Trustee. “The turnout and diversity of boats showing up for the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta is exciting, and we look forward to a solid three days of racing.”

Commissioning 2011

Dan Nerney Photos

In 1988, the NYYC opened Harbour Court in Newport, RI – the summer home of former New York Yacht Club Commodore John Nicholas Brown. At that time, Commodore Frank V. Snyder promised Club members and Newport’s leaders that we would make things happen. The words he used were: “Harbour Court won’t be just another mansion on a hill.” It wasn’t then, and it certainly isn’t today. On May 7th, 2011, 300 members and their guests assembled on a beautiful May day for the 24th Commissioning of Harbour Court, led by NYYC Commodore Robert C. Towse Jr. Thus formally opening the NYYC's on-the-water clubhouse and the 2011 sailing season. On the calendar, noted Commodore Towse, are 15 major regattas including the Transatlantic Race 2011 in late June and early July and the NYYC Invitational Cup presented by Rolex in September. Then Harbour Court will host 22 yacht club teams, representing 16 nations from six different continents. The 157th Annual Regatta is June 10-12, the Swan 42 Nationals are July 14-17 and the U.S. Youth Championships August 15-18. (Dan Nerney photos.) View More

NYYC Team Extreme Wins 2011 Wilson Trophy

NYYC Team Extreme defeats West Kirby Hawks on a wild and windy final day: Day 3 of the 2011 Wilson Trophy for the British Open Team racing Championship saw some extreme conditions for the final day of racing, with a series of weather fronts bringing prolonged gusts up to 30 knots. With last year?s two finalists, West Kirby Hawks and NYYC Extreme, both assured a quarter-final place, there were as many as 16 teams involved in the scramble to secure their place in the final eight, making every match in final rounds of the Swiss League qualification absolutely vital. By late morning, as the twentieth and final round began, it was becoming apparent that 12 wins were going to be required to make it through to the quarter finals. From here on, for the teams still fighting for a place in the elimination rounds, it was a case of win or go home. 2011 New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup presented by Rolex

A Progressive and Proactive Approach to Racing

Newport, R.I., USA (May 8, 2011) – The history of New York Yacht Club is intertwined with progressive thinkers – starting with John Cox Stevens and James Gordon Bennett Jr. – who took  a proactive approach to organizing sailing contests that have become benchmarks for all other sailing events:  from transatlantic crossings to America’s Cup match races, to team and fleet races.  The proactive approach is the common thread that extends to The New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup presented by Rolex, scheduled for September 10-17, which has announced that extensive on-the-water umpiring will be used for the competition.  Primarily used for match and team racing and the medal rounds of the Olympic Regatta, this will be the first time NYYC has emphasized umpiring to this degree for fleet racing, a first for a Corinthian event of this magnitude. Thomas Klok Wins Sperry Top-Sider Annapolis NOOD Regatta

Thomas Klok and Crew Marie and Will Crump are NYYC Members

Annapolis, M.D. May 2, 2011 -- After a weekend of big breeze and dramatic windshifts on Chesapeake Bay, you might not expect an out-of-towner to come out on top of the Sperry Top-Sider Annapolis NOOD, where members of the Capital City's strong racing community accounted for the majority of the 220-boat fleet. Nonetheless, when the overall winner was announced, it was Copenhagen resident Thomas Klok—whose team won a three-way tie for first place in the 29-boat J/80 division—who came bounding up to accept the silver dish, as well as the real prize, an invitation to join the winners of seven other NOOD regattas at the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Championship, hosted by Sunsail in the British Virgin Islands this November. New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup presented by Rolex

O'Leary and Monteiro de Barros Set A High Standard

Even as a light snow decorated daffodils breaking through the ground around New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court, the realization that the 2011 sailing season in the northern hemisphere is not far off has been confirmed by the announcement of two skippers who will lead their yacht club teams in the upcoming New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup presented by Rolex. The biennial event, which puts its primary focus on Corinthian competition by virtue of allowing only non-professional sailors to compete, made its debut in 2009 to widely acclaimed success and returns to Newport this September 10-17. After a qualifying event for 24 of America’s foremost yacht clubs was run during its off-year, a firm roster of 19 participating clubs was announced and it is now expected that additional entries will bring the event close to its maximum number of 24. Coming of Age: RORC Caribbean 600

ANTIGUA, February 25, The RORC Caribbean 600 has been a special event for all of the competitors, last night the closest battle in any class was decided and the two remaining yachts racing, showing great fighting spirit, provided a fitting finale to racing, in the beautiful but sometimes brutal waters of the central Caribbean. Late yesterday evening, the Army Sailing Association's A40, British Soldier, crossed the finish line. The team largely consists of British soldiers on leave from active duty in Afghanistan but not entirely. Two of the crew were from the Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force and had no offshore sailing experience. The Antiguans put there hands up for the trip and were shown the ropes by some of the more experienced members of the crew. British Soldier had a blistering start to the race and sailed intelligently around the track, to claim a well deserved win in Class Two, showing dedication to duty but also allowing the soldiers a relaxing shakedown from their vital role. I’ve never been so unhappy and thought that I made a major error in judgment.” Photo of Hubbards' Dawn Star by Rolex/Daniel Forster.

Bryon Ehrhart's Lucky Wins Rolex Middle Sea Race

Valletta, Malta, October 27, 2010-- Bryon Ehrhart’s Lucky, a TP 52, is the overall winner on corrected time in IRC in the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Said Ehrhart, a member of the New York Yacht Club and Chicago Yacht Club, “It’s beyond my expectations. We came wanting to do a very interesting race, and we had that, and a good performance to match. The Rolex Middle Sea Race has a great reputation, which is why we came all the way down here. We thought it would be an interesting race, and it turned out to be much more interesting – every sail on the boat was used, from the lightest flapper to the strongest spinnaker... A very, very challenging race…technically and strategically.” Photo of Bryon Ehrhart by Rolex/Kurt Arrigo. View More
