2009 12 Metre World Championship Seems Like Old Times NEWPORT, R.I. (September 26, 2009) – While history didn’t quite repeat itself today, it came pretty close. The final races of the 2009 12 Metre World Championships were sailed on a sparkling Rhode Island Sound as helicopters buzzed and spectator boats jockeyed for front row seats to the action – evoking memories of 26 years ago to the day when the longest winning streak (132 years) in sporting history ended with the loss of the “Auld Mug” to Australia. On this day, however, instead of just two Twelves there were 17 making their way around the old America’s Cup stomping grounds off Brenton Point and with many of the same spectators there to pay homage as the helicopters droned above. Anna Tunnicliffe Wins NYYC Women’s Match Racing Regatta The final day of the New York Yacht Club Women’s Match Racing Clinic & Regatta brought lighter and shiftier northeasterly winds and a variety of current conditions that challenged the sailors in the semi-finals and finals. Anna Tunnicliffe, second from right in the photo, and Sally Barkow started the morning by closing out their semi-final series with their third straight wins over Lotte Pedersen and Genny Tulloch, respectively, to move into a much-awaited finals match-up. Barkow started strongly in the best-of-five finals with two convincing wins, controlling the side of the course with less current in both races. Tunnicliffe rallied back with a decisive win in the third race. In the fourth race, Barkow pushed Tunnicliffe over the line early and opened up a commanding lead. However, on the first run, she ran out of breeze, and Tunnicliffe brought up a new breeze line to close the gap and just get an inside overlap at the leeward mark and stole a comeback win. In the final race, the two were side by side around the first lap before Barkow was penalized for jibing too close at the end of the run. She was able to take her penalty and round right behind Tunnicliffe but wasn’t able to pass, and Tunnicliffe went on to win the finals by a 3-2 score.

View More Open Letter to the Société Nautique de Genève and the Golden Gate Yacht Club About the 33rd America's Cup This is an open letter to the Société Nautique de Genève and the Golden Gate Yacht Club from the commodores of the five yacht clubs that either set the America’s Cup competition in motion: the Royal Yacht Squadron, or have been a former trustee of the Cup: the New York Yacht Club, the Royal Perth Yacht Club, the San Diego Yacht Club and Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. We write to encourage you to negotiate together for a fair and equitable multi-challenger competition for the thirty-third defense of the America’s Cup. We believe that such an event, as opposed to a “Deed of Gift” defense, is in the greater interest of the sport of sailing in general and of members of the broad America’s Cup community, who have invested their time and resources to make the event a true international competition of the highest order. We hope that the current challenger and defender will work together to find a way through their differences to bring about such an event for the good of yachting and the America’s Cup.

March 10, 2009 -- Crossing the finish line off Les Sables d’Olonne at 12h 43m 19s GMT Rich Wilson completed the 24,840 mile Vendée Globe solo non stop round the world race in ninth place. Wilson's highly creditable result is testament to his excellent seamanship skills, deep determination, careful planning and prudent execution, as the race has shown the highest attrition rate yet. Wilson finished 121 days 00 hours, 41 minutes and 19 seconds after leaving Les Sables d’Olonne on Sunday November 9th. While 19 of the 30 skippers who started the Vendée Globe on November 9th had to retire from the race, the most grueling challenge in solo ocean racing, Wilson, the race’s senior skipper at 58 years old, stuck rigidly to his watchwords of safety and conservatism, showing huge determination to complete the course as the pinnacle of a sailing career that already included three ocean-passage records. Wilson was racing for his Ocean Challenge Live!, which allowed more than a quarter-million school students to follow his journey online and in newspapers. The race was won by Michel Desjoyeaux in Fonicia. For more on Wilson in the the Vendée Globe, Click Here. For More on Wilson's Sites Alive! website, Click Here
Annapolis-Newport Race New York Yacht Club Rejoins Organizing Authority The 2009 Annapolis to Newport Race will start June 5th, the 62nd anniversary of the race. The race has had four hosts since its start in 1947: New York Yacht Club, Annapolis Yacht Club, Ida Lewis Yacht Club and the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron. The first five races were run from Newport to Annapolis. In 1957 the route was reversed, and the popularity of the race blossomed. The race has been run from Annapolis to Newport in alternate years ever since. The NYYC and AYC shared the primary responsibility for running the race up until the mid-eighties when NYYC handed over primary responsibility to AYC. Recognizing the history and importance of the race, this year the NYYC reaffirms its commitment to the race and rejoins AYC as co-organizing authority. Team USA 1 from the New York Yacht Club is the 2009 ISAF Team Racing World Champions, defeating the local AUS 1 team in the final in Perth, Western Australia to successfully defend the title it won two years ago. The American team of Clay Bishoff, Lisa Keith, Colin Merrick, Amanda Callahan, Peter Levesque and Liz Hall lived up to its billing as favorites to sweep to victory in Perth. The team from the New York Yacht Club has proven to be a class apart over recent years and arrived in Perth as hot favorites to defend the ISAF Team Racing World Championship title they won in Gandia, Spain two years ago. Despite fierce competition from the best team-racing outfits from around the world, the Americans dominated the racing from day one. Of their 52 matches against 14 teams spread over four round robin series, they won 47 – a 90% winning record – way ahead of the next best AUS 1 at 71%. Team USA 1 was even more dominant in the knock-out stages – sweeping to victory 2-0 against the home favorites AUS 1 from the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, joint hosts of the 2009 Team Worlds. Also, NYYC member Paul Callahan with Roger Cleworth and Tom Brown finished second in the Sonar class to John Robertson. Erin Maxwell explained that had it not been for a mishap yesterday (they capsized in the last race), things might have been quite different. “We had a huge lead on the fleet in that race, and we were saying to ourselves ‘all we have to do is beat the Danish (which we were doing) and don’t flip!,’” said Maxwell, explaining that had they not, they would have won and simply had to have beaten the Danish in the medal race today to take gold. “We knew it was going to be a big breeze in the medal race and that would be to our advantage.” As Maxwell foreshadowed in her story, she and Kinsolving won today’s race while the Danish team finished second, leaving a point spread of four points between them.
