NYYC Race Week at Newport Presented by Rolex One-Design, IRC and PHRF Racers Start Racing
NEWPORT, R.I. (July 23, 2008) -- With but a few days to recharge, the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) race office is in full swing again for the second half of its sixth biennial Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. (Last weekend, classic yachts sailed in the first half of Race Week, which also doubled as the club's 100th birthday celebration for famed yacht designer Olin J. Stephens.) Starting tomorrow, two IRC, two PHRF and four one-design classes will begin a four-day racing series that includes the 2008 North American Championship for NYYC Club Swan 42s, the North American Championship for J/109s, the East Coast Championship for J/122s, and the Northeast Championship for Beneteau First 36.7s. Joining the racing on Friday will be both the Melges 32 class, sailing its National Championship, and the J/105 class, sailing its East Coast Championship. All told, 120 boats will take to the waters of Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound for an action-packed three- or four-day “weekend.”

NEWPORT, R.I. (July 17, 2008) -- With 53 classic yachts registered to race this weekend in the first half of the New York Yacht Club's (NYYC) sixth biennial Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex, another 123 boats are prepping for the second half of the event, which starts next Thursday, July 24, and continues through Sunday, July 27. And while there are PHRF and IRC boats signed up, it looks to be shaping up as an extraordinary one-design showcase, especially for NYYC Club Swan 42s, which will be sailing their North Americans and have 21 entries, and Melges 32s, which are vying for their Nationals and have 21. In addition, J/109s are sailing their North Americans; J/105s and J/122s their East Coast Championships; and Beneteau First 36.7s their Northeast Championships. "It's going to be ultra competitive," said Dan Meyers (Boston, Mass.) about the on-water action he expects at the June 13-15 event, which precedes the 2008 Newport to Bermuda Race, a high-profile ocean race for which these same boats are preparing.
