Stan Honey Speaks at a Sold-out Club Night

Stan Honey, director of Technology for the 34th America’s Cup, was the featured speaker at a capacity club night at the New York Yacht Club in New York on Tuesday, October 25. Honey, a man of many talents – he is the most recent recipient of the Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Award in the U.S. for navigating the French 105-foot trimaran Groupama 3 around the world in an astounding time of 48 days, setting the Jules Verne Trophy record – is, perhaps, equally well known for “painting” the computer-generated yellow line signifying a first down in football on television. He talked about this record passage as well as the technology behind the TV coverage of the America’s Cup leading up to the finals in San Francisco in 2013.

Barking Mad Wins Farr 40 Europeans

Skippered by James Richardson, a NYYC member

In a thrilling conclusion which saw the top two boats heading into the final race of the series tied on points, Barking Mad (USA) has been crowned UNO Farr 40 European Champion 2011. The boat owned by Jim Richardson, a NYYC member, and with Hamish Pepper calling tactics secured victory with a storming win in the last race. Second place went to Alberto Rossi’s Enfant Terrible (ITA) and Wolfgang Schaefer’s Struntje Light (GER) took third. Richardson, three time Farr 40 World Champion and former Class president, was pleased with the level of competition within the fleet: "The racing was incredibly tight all week; Enfant Terrible, Transfusion, Struntje Light and our boat were neck and neck for quite a while, and we went into the last race tied on points with Enfant – who would have won the tie-break as we hadn’t won any races - and just two points ahead of Transfusion." Bruce Kuryla Wins U. S. Offshore Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (September 25, 2011) – The Lloyd Phoenix Trophy was decided in dramatic fashion on Sunday at the U.S. Offshore Championship, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy Squadron on Chesapeake Bay. Defending champion Bruce Kuryla (Milford, Conn.) of the New York Yacht Club and Milford Yacht Club and his team edged skipper Steve Travis (Mercer Island, Wash.) and his crew from the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle by a boat length in today’s final distance race to win the Championship. “To pull it out at the finish line is unbelievable,” said Kuryla. “We were behind Travis at the bottom mark, and after going back and forth with them, we trailed by a hundred yards at the top mark. We went low and fast in the light wind and kept creeping along in Long Island Sound style,” explained Kuryla. View More

Ken Colburn – Skipper of the NYYC's Invitational Cup Team

By Michael Levitt, Communications Director NYYC

New York Yacht Club-member Ken Colburn and his NYYC Swan 42 Apparition are representing the NYYC at the Invitational Cup presented by Rolex. Colburn, of Dover, Mass. and Southport, ME, got there by virtue of decisively winning the Swan 42 class at the Annual Regatta presented by Rolex in June and winning (on a tie breaker) the NYYC Swan 42 US Nationals in July. On the last day of the latter regatta a full 18 points separated Colburn and Apparition from NYYC-member Phil Lotz and Arethusa. They were practically in different area codes. Then Lotz, the successful defender of the 2009 Invitational Cup, won two races that final day (July 17th) and scored a sixth to even the score. However, overall Colburn displayed an amazing five first-place finishes to Lotz’s two to break the tie. Looking at the big picture Colburn had 84 points after 19 races in these two qualifying regattas to Lotz’s 98 points. Thus, the NYYC has a new standard-bearer. A total of six NYYC skippers competed in the selection series to represent the club for the 2011 Invitational Cup. (Michael Levitt photo) View More

Newport, R.I. August 21, 2011 -- After 126 races sailed, St. Francis Yacht Club emerged the winner of the 2011 Commodore George R. Hinman Masters  Invitational Trophy. The twelfth yearly edition of New York Yacht Club Masters Team Race for The Hinman Masters Invitational Trophy was held at New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court Clubhouse on August 19, 20 and 21 with teams representing 12 clubs. Competitors in this year's event include five-time champion New York Yacht Club; American Yacht Club of Rye, NY; Annapolis Yacht Club of Annapolis, MD; Boston Yacht Club of Marblehead, MA; Eastern Yacht Club of Marblehead, MA; Larchmont Yacht Club of Larchmont, NY; Noroton Yacht Club of Noroton CT, the 2010 winner; Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club of Oyster Bay, NY; Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans, LA; St. Francis Yacht Club of San Francisco, CA; Texas Corinthian Yacht Club of Kemah, TX and a combined team representing Storm Trysail Yacht Club/Ida Lewis Yacht Club, of Newport, RI. Unique to the format of the New York Yacht Club Masters Team Race for the Hinman Masters Invitational Trophy is that each boat must include a skipper at least 45 years of age and crew members must be at least 40 years of age. The regatta is sailed in NYYC’s fleet of Sonars, complemented this year by the addition of Seawanhaka Corinthian’s Sonars, with each team comprised of three boats with the lowest combined score winning each match. J/105 North Americans

Three NYYC Members Aboard Winning Scimitar: Henry Brauer, Stu Johnstone and Steve Cucchiarro

Marblehead, MA, August 14, 2011 For the forty-two J/105 teams that participated in this year's J/105 North Americans, it will certainly be one of the most memorable regattas sailed in a long time-- the weather cooperated with four distinct days of sailing, each offering the highly-competitive J/105 teams a different challenge to overcome. For many local sailors, however, it will be most remembered for the highly atypical "Marblehead conditions"-- go left early, then right late in the typical summer sea-breeze day-- it was anything but that!

Rolex Fastnet Race

Carina, skippered by A. Rives Potts, NYYC Rear Commodore, Wins Class in Rolex Fastnet

A shut-down of the wind and a foul tide just short of the finish line made for a challenging few hours for the Royal Ocean Racing Club race team as an armada of Rolex Fastnet Race competitors descended on the finish line. Between 0000 and 0200 this morning 105 boats, or just over one third of the record-sized fleet, crossed the finish line. In most other classes, France dominated. One exception to the domination of this year’s race was American Rives Potts, rear commodore of the NYYC, whose 48 foot McCurdy & Rhodes-designed Carina won Class 2, ahead of two French boats – the JND35 Gaia and the J/122 Nutmeg IV. Despite his boat dating back to 1969 and originally having been the Nye family’s replacement for Carina 2, back-to-back winner of the Rolex Fastnet in 1955 and 1957, Potts is a boatyard owner in Connecticut and has been constantly tinkering and upgrading Carina since he acquired her in the early 1990s. Less obvious is that he is also a five-time America’s Cup sailor and winner, having competed on Freedom in 1980 and subsequent campaigns with Dennis Conner through 1995, and who completed the 1979 Fastnet Race aboard the winner, Ted Turner’s maxi Tenacious.

“It is fabulous,” said Potts of his win. “This is a 71-boat class with some very good boats in it and we feel very fortunate. Our navigator Dirk Johnson did a fabulous job. He was always looking for where there was the most pressure and the least current. The race was probably 90% going to weather and that is our strong point. Had it been more off the wind I’m sure the lighter, more modern boats would have left us in the dust. It was a good race for us.” With Rolex Fastnet Race and Bermuda Race wins behind her, Carina is now off to Australia to attempt to obtain the last piece of what Potts described as the “triple crown,” namely the Rolex Sydney Hobart. Swan 42 Nationals

All Over but the Shouting

NEWPORT, RI, July 17 -- As Sunday dawned a full 18 points separated Ken Colburn and Apparition from Phil Lotz and Arethusa at the Swan 42 US Nationals, sailed July 14-17 at the New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court. Then spoke Arethusa. Phil Lotz’s Arethusa won the last two races today and clearly won the final day with a 6-1-1 finish. That left him tied after 11 races at 62 points with Ken Colburn and Apparition, the series leader. However, on the strength of Colburn’s five first-place finishes to Lotz’s two, Colburn was named the winner of the US Nationals. Four points behind Colburn and Lotz was Jon Halbert's Vitesse, fourth was Glenn Darden's and Phil Williamson's Hoss and fifth James Madden's Stark Raving Mad IV. A total of 19 yachts sailed. NYYC Invitational Cup "Keeper" Trophy Presented

Former NYYC Commodore Robert L. James and former Trustee Charles A. Robertson presented the first of two Invitational Cup trophies. The artist is Norman McMillan. This trophy goes to the yacht club of the winner of the next (2011) NYYC Invitational Cup; the yacht club keeps it until the next event. The trophy, said McMillan, "is in the form of a tetrahedron shape" -- as in a racing mark. "It  represents good wind and water. The materials are acrylic and stainless... The blue represents the water, and the stainless steel is the sailboat." Photo by Dan Nerney shows Charles A. Robertson, left, and Commodore Robert L. James.

157th NYYC Annual Regatta presented by Rolex

Sunday: That's a Wrap

NEWPORT, R.I. (June 12, 2011) – With 135 boats competing, the New York Yacht Club’s 157th Annual Regatta presented by Rolex, held June 10-12, broke all of its past attendance records, and with winds whipping into the high teens for buoy racing over the weekend, it certainly is in line for being the most memorable Annual Regatta in recent history. The oldest regatta in the country kicked off with an optional 18-nautical mile Around the Island Race on Friday that yielded Richard Oland’s (St. John, New Brunswick) Southern Cross 52 Vela Veloce as the IRC 2 class and overall winner, his performance worthy of a Rolex timepiece as prize. In weekend racing, Oland’s team continued to fare well but was ultimately outmatched in IRC 2 by David and Sandra Askew’s (Annapolis, Md.) TP 52 Flying Jenny, which won and was followed in the standing by Peter Cunningham’s (CAY) IRC 52 PowerPlay, leaving third for Vela Veloce. Photo by Dan Nerney. View More
