Newport R.I., USA (Sept. 19, 2009) – No one knew quite what to expect, even though a year and a half of planning went into getting 19 teams from 14 nations to Newport, R.I., for the inaugural New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup. The event, which started on Wednesday (Sept. 16) , and concluded today (Saturday, Sept. 19), was conceived and very well received as a high-profile regatta for amateur yacht club teams. To that end, the New York Yacht Club put forth its best effort not only to host the event but also to field its own team, which won after 11 spectacular races on Rhode Island Sound and Narragansett Bay. New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup A Magnificent Show About to Begin Newport, R.I., USA (Sept. 15, 2009) – Seemingly overnight, the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court facility has transformed into an international village teeming with hundreds of people, including sailors from 14 nations who have arrived to compete in the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup. "It’s obvious that a lot of work has gone into this,” said Craig Healy, a Soling world champion who will skipper the St. Francis Yacht Club’s team. “It’s very well organized.” With a Wednesday (Sept. 16) through Saturday (Sept. 19) racing schedule, most of the 19 teams – all of which represent yacht clubs and have adhered to strict guidelines for crew composition -- checked in this past weekend, attended a Swan 42 Performance Symposium, and began practicing on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound on the course once used for America’s Cup races when the New York Yacht Club last hosted that contest here in 1983. Newport, R.I., USA (Sept. 10, 2009) – It will be reminiscent of Newport’s America’s Cup days when 19 yacht club teams from 14 nations descend on this “City by the Sea” next week. Like in 1983, when Newport last hosted the Cup races here, the patriotic teams will be sailing on Rhode Island Sound for a trophy kept by the New York Yacht Club, but this time it isn’t the “Auld Mug.” It’s the Invitational Cup, which the New York Yacht Club has recently put into circulation for the purpose of reviving amateur racing on these shores and around the world. Meet the Teams Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Yacht Club Italiano New York, N.Y., USA (August 26, 2009) – While most Europeans enjoy a long holiday during the month of August, two groups of Italians are using the vacation time to prepare for the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) Invitational Cup taking place September 15-19 in Newport, R.I. The team from the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, in Porto Cervo, took part in the Trofeo Formenton coastal race on the northern side of the island of Sardinia, while the team from the Yacht Club Italiano, in Genoa, chartered a Swan 42 to bank some practice time. Both teams will arrive a few days in advance of the inaugural regatta’s start to acclimate to the NYYC Swan 42s (being used by all teams in the event) as well as the challenging fall winds of Southern New England. As recently as this summer, the two clubs matched up in Newport to continue a long, friendly rivalry at the biennial “MadCap Cup,” which was created some 130 years ago as a fleet race in 6 Metre yachts and has evolved into a team racing event, sailed in dinghies, between the two clubs. And while that event is similar to the America’s Cup in that the winner (defender) chooses the venue of the next race and the trophy is a magnificent silver pitcher, it is the Invitational Cup that will capture the hearts and minds of the sailing world when it turns a new spotlight on the Corinthian spirit of sailing. 'Friendly Competition between Foreign Countries'
